Healthy Junk Food is an oxymoron. Saying it out loud makes you seem ridiculous yourself – who has ever heard of healthy junk food at all? Can eating junk food, the world’s number one cause of obesity, actually be healthy for you, and can you even lose weight eating junk food? Yes, you can have cheat days during your diets where you can eat whatever you like, whether it is ice cream or Famous Amos cookies. But would a diet focused on junk food be able to help you at all? Is it even a diet, at all?

Can Junk food ever be healthy?

We analyzed the ‘healthiest’ junk foods that you can ever purchase from the stores and eat – that would serve not only as a good way to stave off your hunger, but also as substitutes for the other worse off foods that you would eat on your cheat days. While it definitely is better than stuffing your stomach on buffet foods, you still should watch your intake of these foods.

Junk food can be good for you – really?

Despite leading mostly to lots of different issues such as obesity, gastrointestinal issues, heart disease and bad cholesterol levels, junk foods may have some merit in that can be brought to people’s bodies if ingested. First and foremost, Junk foods still carry some sort of nutrition that can be easily attained by people.

Burgers and Pizzas

Pizzas and Burgers often include slices of cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and other vegetables, and sometimes use whole wheat bread for their crusts and buns. Cheese contains high amount of protein which is essential to build muscle. Tomatoes and tomato sauces in burgers actually contain vitamins A and C, as well as anti-oxidants, which can actually reduce the risk of cancer. We do not have to highlight the merits of the vegetables and meat used in these foods, which are already widely understood and accepted in the world.


Nuts, such as cashews, walnuts, almonds and the usual baked peanuts you can find in packs at your neighbourhood convenience store are loosely classified as junk food as eating a little bit of those a day can actually help you. Not only do they stave off the hunger, many types of nuts in the cornucopia of different nut families do carry other vitamins, fat and nutrients that are healthy for the body. However, try to stay away from the heavily salted peanut brands, as these tend to become very addictive as snacks. Snacks that are eaten in moderation are still not as damaging to the human body’s diet, but salted nuts are hard for people to not get addicted to, and thus should be avoided as much as possible.

Beef Jerky

Beef jerky, while not a favourite option of snack by Singaporeans, is still available in the shelves in many supermarkets. Singaporeans are just generally not used to eating beef jerky or chunks of meat that are cured and packed with a long expiration date. However, beef jerky is packed with lots of protein and also does not increase the levels of insulin, which triggers fat storage in your body. However as with nuts, remember to stay away from the ones that come with lots of sodium.

Wine, especially red wine is good for your heart. The alcohol in wine is also linked to lower belly fat when consumed in moderation. Pinot Noir actually has the most disease-fighting anti-oxidants than any type of wine or even alcoholic beverage.

Our conclusion on junk food

Now that you know some of the junk foods that you can go to if you are still hungry and craving a snack, especially during cheat day, go ahead and take some of the foods above, and rinse them down with some red wine if you fancy.
